To the relevant authorities:
This is a letter to request the unconditional, immediate release of Jimmy Shahinian from detention in Syria’s security system.

Jimmy Shahinian, is a nonviolent Christian activist from Raqqa district of Damascus was taken to detention on June 1, 2012 again.   Held in solitary confinement during his December 2011 detention; he was reported to be stripped of clothing, in sub-zero cell. There is a concern that during his detention he will be tortured repeatedly and coerced to confess crimes that he has not committed. Arbitrary detention is illegal according to Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, endorsed by Syria in 1969 and 1976.

In addition, I remind you that torture is illegal in Syria, according to Article 28 (3) of the Syrian Constitution. The Penal Code of Syria stipulates punishment for anyone inflicting torture. I hold the Syrian government responsible for the safe return of Jimmy Shahinian. I further request that all prisoners of conscience should be released immediately and unconditionally.
Jimmy Shahinian
Sincerely,

What families can do in behalf of people arrested or detained

The family needs to approach a Red Cross Office and open an allegation of arrest. The ICRC takes up all allegations of arrest that are reported to it with the authorities
inorder to clarify what has happened to the individuals concerned. It endeavors to visit those detained or arrested as quickly as possible in order to ensure that the conditions in which they are being held comply with national and international standards. The information is then reported back to the family.
