To the relevant authorities:

I write to request the unconditional, immediate release of
Reem Ghazzi from detention in Syria’s security system.

Reem Ghazzi of Damascus Syria was taken on or around November 26, 2011 and is being held in incommunicado detention at an unknown location where she is at risk of torture and other ill-treatment.  Reem 38 years old is an actress and producer with a degree in English literature and a special interest in live theater. Arbitrary detention is illegal according to Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, endorsed by Syria in 1969 and 1976.

In addition, I remind you that torture is illegal in Syria, according to Article 28 (3) of the Syrian Constitution. The Penal Code of Syria stipulates punishment for anyone inflicting torture.

I hold the Syrian government responsible for the safe return of Reem Ghazzi. I further request that all prisoners of conscience should be released immediately and unconditionally.

Reem Ghazzi

 Sincerely,

What families can do in behalf of people arrested or detained

The family needs to approach a Red Cross Office and open an allegation of arrest.
The ICRC takes up all allegations of arrest that are reported to it with the authorities in order to clarify what has happened to the individuals concerned.
It endeavors to visit those detained or arrested as quickly as possible in order to ensure that the conditions in which they are being held comply with national
and international standards. The information is then reported back to the family.
